Here’s a quick Tuesday Tip for folks using Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the PC:

We all lead busy lives, and thankfully Dragon has ways to help us manage those different roles we take on every day. Say you love to keep in touch with your family over emails but in your spare time you enjoy cooking – your words could be a quite a bit different in these two scenarios. As a solution, the Dragon Professional, Medical, and Legal editions allow you to create multiple vocabularies and use them accordingly. (to learn more please see the workbook on pgs. 87-88)

Let us know if you have any suggestions for Dragon tips or questions that you’d like us to address here in the comments. We’ll do our best to feature as many as we can here each week!

This week we shine the spotlight on Duane French, our customer of the week!

After an accident in 1968 left him a quadriplegic, Duane turned to Dragon NaturallySpeaking to help him communicate, reach his professional goals, and even meet the love of his life.

Years ago, Duane recalls that he still faced many challenges when trying to communicate because assistive technologies weren’t nearly as advanced as they are today; he even says he “charmed [his] way through college by asking young women to type [his] papers.” Becoming Director of the Alaska Division of Vocational Rehabilitation opened his eyes to a new product, though – Dragon NaturallySpeaking. From the start he was impressed with the program’s level of accuracy, which he says has come a long ways since he first used it in 1997. Today, Duane uses Dragon on both his work and home computers to help him oversee 350 employees and a $50 million budget as Director of the Washington State Division of Disability Determination Services. He says, “I feel helpless without Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It has been a transformational force in my life and has helped make the success I once dreamed of a reality.”

Here’s a quick Thursday tip for folks using Dragon Dictate for Mac:

The Status window in Dragon Dictate is often called the application’s “control center” and will float over all other applications. If it’s in your way though, you can always just say “Hide Status window.” To see it again say “Show Status window” and you’re back in business.

On this week’s episode of Ask the Dictator, Peter “The Dictator” Mahoney is back to show us how to create advanced, multi-level lists using Dragon. Something that could come in handy for those Spring cleaning lists we all have to check-off!

Here’s a quick Tuesday tip for folks using Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the PC:

Trying to find a document on your computer can sometimes feel like a scavenger hunt, but thankfully Dragon offers us some shortcuts. For example, if you made a spring cleaning list last month and want to open it to check-off some items – just say “search documents for <spring cleaning>” and Dragon will show you the matches. For more info, see pg. 59 in the workbook.

This week, we shine the spotlight on Sandy Schlaudecker, our customer of the week! With a long-held interest in her family history, Sandy has set out to preserve the stories of her great-great-great-grandfather by transcribing his letters from the Civil War with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Sandy initially started off by re-writing the hundreds of letters by hand to make them easier to read but soon realized there was a much more efficient way to do this. It was at the Assistive Technology Conference that she first learned about the voice recognition software, and now talks about “what a blessing Dragon has been.” She says, “I’ve saved a lot of time and frustration. A letter takes me about a fifth of the time to transcribe as it used to.” Today, Sandy is enjoying sharing these stories of her ancestors and has been able to connect with other relatives to learn even more about her family. With the help of Dragon, her family history will be kept safe for generations to come.

To read more about Sandy’s story, you can find the full case study here. (*note: this link will default to open a pdf file of the case study)
